One data core, five ways in

Datasets, reports, catchments, the API and the MCP server all read from the same versioned figures for every place in Australia, so a figure in a report is the same figure in your BI tool.

A report or a dataset needs nothing set up on your side; the API and the MCP server are for when the figures need to live inside your own tools.

GEOGRAPHY

Every place on the same boundaries

Figures come on the ABS's 2026 boundaries, from a whole state down to blocks of a few hundred people. Councils, suburbs and postcodes are built from those same blocks, so every level shares one base.

For an area that isn't on any map, draw it, or set a radius or a drive or walk time around a site; travel times use OpenStreetMap's roads without traffic. We weight each block by the share of its people inside and work out medians after the counts are added up.

Every figure shows its working

Open any number and you see where it came from, which boundaries it sits on, what it rests on and whether it's a count, an estimate or a projection.

PARRAMATTA · SUBURB · NSWPOPULATION

Parramatta had 30,210 residents[1] at the 2021 Census, up 17%[2] on 2016, and is projected to pass 40,000 by 2031[3].

Parramatta's suburb boundary moved between editions, so this figure is apportioned from ABS counts rather than read straight off an ABS table, and it's marked as estimated on the figure itself.

  1. 01CollectRaw tables come straight from the ABS and our other sources, stored as released.
  2. 02MatchOlder censuses are moved onto 2026 boundaries so 2011, 2016 and 2021 compare like for like.
  3. 03CheckSmall bases are flagged, open-ended medians are shown as floors, and ABS’s own figure wins where it publishes one.
  4. 04VersionEach release is kept, so a figure in last year’s report can be reproduced exactly.

A note on 2021

The latest Census results are from 2021. The 2026 results are due from 2027, and we'll load them as they're released.

Projections are labelled

Population and age are grown with ABS estimates and Geoscience Australia projections. About 70 other shares are moved by their trend since 2016, where that trend would have predicted 2021 better than no change, and the rest are held at 2021. Each of these figures is marked as a projection in the app and in API responses.

Lockdown caveat

The 2021 Census ran during lockdowns in Sydney and Melbourne, so work and travel-to-work figures carry a flag.
