API

Census figures in your own tools

The same figures as the Censible app, through a REST API for your code and an MCP server for AI assistants like Claude, with each answer carrying its source, its basis and, where the ABS publishes one, the ABS's own figure.

API

A REST API over every figure

Search places, pull figures for up to 1,000 of them at once, find places like one you know, and get figures for any group of places, drive or walk time, or area you draw. Responses are JSON, and each value carries its basis, base and ABS's own figure where there is one.

  • IDs are natural keysPlaces are region_ids like AU_2026_SAL_SAL13176 (country, boundary year, level, code) and figures are metric_ids like median_rent_weekly. Find them with /v1/regions and /v1/metrics.
  • Never add up valuesFor a group of places, a drawn area or a drive or walk time, preview or save it as an area. Counts are summed first and each metric's formula applied last, so shares and medians come out right.
  • Every figure shows its workingbasis says whether a value is the place's own census, carried onto today's boundaries, projected or a trend. estimated flags apportioned values, and abs_value is ABS's own figure where it publishes one.
MCP SERVER

Ask an AI assistant, get a sourced answer

The Censible MCP server gives Claude and other assistants that support remote MCP servers the same figures as the API. Connect it once, sign in with your Censible account, and ask about any place in plain English.

Server URLhttps://api.censible.com.au/mcp
  1. 01ClaudeIn claude.ai or the Claude desktop app, open Settings, then Connectors, and add Censible from the connector directory once it's listed there, or until then as a custom connector with the server URL. Claude asks you to sign in to Censible the first time you use it.
  2. 02Claude Team and EnterpriseAn organisation owner adds Censible once, in Admin settings under Connectors, from the directory or as a custom connector with the server URL, which makes it available to everyone in the organisation. Each member then connects it in their own Connectors settings and signs in with their own Censible account, so they see only their own saved areas and sites.
  3. 03Claude CodeAdd the server from your terminal, then run /mcp in Claude Code to sign in.
claude mcp add --transport http censible https://api.censible.com.au/mcp
  4. 04Other MCP clientsAdd a remote MCP server (streamable HTTP) with the server URL. It signs in with OAuth, so your client opens a Censible sign-in page the first time.
